Ubud, set amongst beautiful scenery, abounds with art galleries and studios. European painters settled here in the 1930s and again in the 1960s and had profound effect on the traditional artistic style. Music and dance troupes also perform here. Mas, a few kilometers south of Ubud, is the place to visit for woodcarving, although most shops now produce carvings only for the tourist trade. In Batubulan craftsmen continue to carve soft, volcanic tufa into the traditional guardian figures found at every temple entrance. Batik and clothing is produced mainly around Gianyar.
